George Tinsley, Sr.’s life is a rags-to-riches story powered by faith, tenacity, athletics, and education. Tinsley’s unyielding determination to turn obstacles into opportunities catapulted him to athletic stardom, professional achievements, business success, and becoming a helping hand and role model to many.

Born George William Penebaker (1946), Tinsley grew up in Smoketown, an inner-city neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky. After spending time with his babysitter, Mrs. Willie Tinsley, his mother did not return to get him. He was seven months old, and Mrs. Tinsley took him in. Tinsley’s new home became a typical single 8’ x 10’ room, where he lived until he turned 13. Later, Mrs. Tinsley became ill, and George moved in with her son. During this time, Tinsley became increasingly aware of his socioeconomic shortcomings. However, he yearned for a better life. As his height and athletic prowess grew, so did his self-worth and confidence. He distinguished himself on the basketball team at Louisville Male High School (where he is now enshrined in their Athletic, Business, and Alumni Hall of Fame). He earned a full basketball scholarship at Ky. Wesleyan College (where he is also glorified in their Athletic, Alumni & Business Hall of Fame). As a freshman, he started for their NCAA Division II Championship team. He also excelled academically, making the Dean’s list, joining the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity, and receiving the Oak & Ivy Award, the college’s most prestigious student recognition. He later was the first former Athlete and Afro-American to give the Commencement Speech. After winning three NCAA Championships in four years and earning his college degree, Tinsley’s career path included pro basketball, teaching, coaching, corporate America, and entrepreneurship.

He and his wife grew several companies, PenGeo Inc. dba Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurants and Tinsley Family Concessions, into a highly successful and respected company, operating over sixty restaurants, starting from one KFC restaurant. In recognition of his success, Tinsley has been featured in countless media, received numerous business and civic leadership awards, and enjoys the admiration of family, friends, and associates. Tinsley and his wife, Seretha, live in Winter Haven, FL, and have two children, George II and Penni (deceased 2020). George II is now President and CEO of Tinsley Family Concessions, ensuring an intergenerational legacy of success.
