Lonnie Ali, lifetime director of the Muhammad Ali Center and wife of the late Muhammad Ali, was recognized with the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award for Positive Leadership during the 2026 Navigating Leadership Now event, held April 23 at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville.
Presented by Ryan Quinn, director of the Center for Positive Leadership at the University of Louisville, the award honors Ali’s lifelong example of compassion, service and purpose-driven leadership. Moving forward, the award will bear her name and be presented annually to individuals who demonstrate a lifetime of positive leadership through both extraordinary accomplishments and everyday actions.
“When you give a lifetime award, you’re doing it for two reasons,” Quinn said. “One is because of extraordinary things that the person has done, but the other is because they have consistently, throughout their life, done normal things in extraordinary ways.”
Ali has done just that throughout her life, often leading from behind the scenes while helping preserve and advance Muhammad Ali’s humanitarian legacy. Through her work organizing his business and licensing operations, supporting his public life and continuing his mission through the Muhammad Ali Center, she has demonstrated a model of leadership rooted in humility, compassion and long-term impact. “I loved being in the shadows,” Ali said. “There was so much more I could accomplish.” While Ali has often preferred to work outside the spotlight, her leadership has also included moments of national visibility, including her appointment by former President Barack Obama to serve on the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.
In addition to establishing the annual award in Ali’s name, the Center for Positive Leadership announced the creation of the Lonnie Ali Scholarship, supported by an initial $10,000 seed fund. The scholarship will be awarded each year to a student participating in the university’s Elevator experiential learning course on change leadership who does the most exceptional job of practicing positive leadership while working on their change project.
Together, the award and scholarship create a lasting connection between Ali’s example of leadership and the next generation of changemakers, extending her influence beyond the moment of recognition and into future work rooted in compassion, service and action.
The full-day event also featured a presentation from Jim James, lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist for My Morning Jacket, along with leaders across industries, including Jenna Ahern, founder and CEO of Guardian Owl Digital +Go AI; Becky Antle, professor and director of the Center for Family and Community Wellbeing at UofL; Cara Boardman, strategic learning partner and consultant at Leadership Louisville Center; Calvin Coker, associate professor in the UofL Department of Communication; Phillip Crosby, CEO of Dan-O’s Seasoning and Crosby Interactive; Shawn Dawley, president of Shawn Dawley Inspired Leadership; Jesús Martínez, CEO and co-founder of Con Huevos; John Mays, executive leadership coach for John May’s Professional Services; Daniel Montgomery, founder and CEO of Leadership Reality; Seema Sheth, senior vice president and regional executive for the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Louisville Branch; and Ted Smith, UofL professor of environmental medicine.
To help expand opportunities for students striving to become leaders for positive change, consider making a gift to the Lonnie Ali Scholarship Fund and supporting the next generation of compassionate, purpose-driven leaders.
