The University of Louisville has named College of Business leader Jeff Guan as its new Executive Director for AI Strategy and Innovation, a university-wide leadership role that places him at the forefront of one of higher education's most transformative initiatives. As part of the university's newly launched Cardinal Intelligence initiative, Guan will help guide UofL's strategic approach to artificial intelligence, coordinating efforts across teaching, research and administrative operations while ensuring the university embraces AI responsibly and thoughtfully.

For the College of Business community, the appointment represents the continuation of work that has been years in the making. Throughout his career, Guan has championed innovation in business education, helping expand online learning, advance analytics initiatives and integrate emerging technologies into the student experience. His leadership also helped lay the foundation for UofL's broader AI strategy. As a key member of the university's AI Advisory Committee, Guan played an instrumental role in developing recommendations that ultimately evolved into today's Cardinal Intelligence initiative.

"There's real enthusiasm for AI at UofL and across higher education, and that's a good thing," Guan said. "But enthusiasm without coordination can lead to fragmentation, especially in an environment as complex as a university. Cardinal Intelligence gives us a way to adopt AI mindfully and strategically, aligned with our strategic plan, guided by sound policies and built around the people and priorities that define us."

Guan has served the College of Business in numerous leadership roles over the years, including faculty member, Associate Dean for Programs and Interim Dean from 2022 to 2025. During his time as interim dean, he guided the college through a significant period of transition while earning the respect and admiration of faculty, staff and students for his steady leadership, thoughtful decision-making and trademark dry sense of humor.

"Jeff's longstanding commitment to innovation, strategic thinking and the thoughtful advancement of artificial intelligence has helped move both our college and our university forward," said Dean Amy Henley. "Many of us have had the opportunity to experience that leadership firsthand. I am incredibly grateful for the support, advice and wit he shared during my transition into the dean's role, and I couldn't be more excited to see him helping shape the university's future."

While Guan is stepping away from his administrative responsibilities as Associate Dean for Programs, his connection to the College of Business remains strong. Half of his appointment will continue within the college, where he will teach AI courses during the coming academic year and remain actively engaged with students and faculty. His appointment also reflects the College of Business's growing leadership in artificial intelligence. From developing the university's forthcoming Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Artificial Intelligence in Business to exploring new ways AI can enhance teaching, learning and decision-making, the college continues to position students to lead in an increasingly AI-driven economy.

As UofL expands its Cardinal Intelligence initiative, the College of Business is proud to see one of its own leading this important effort. Guan's new role not only recognizes his years of leadership and innovation but also reinforces the college's commitment to preparing the next generation of business leaders for a future where artificial intelligence will be an essential part of every industry.
