How Slingshot Helped a Louisville Organization Use AI to Break Down Barriers Between People and Policy

“The product they produced for us will change the way individuals in this city are able to access public information that comes out of our legislation,” shared Co-Director and Head of Programs for Louisville’s Center for Neighborhoods Mikal Forbush at an exclusive AI forum hosted by the College of Business on Thursday, May 29 in Frazier Hall. The product in question? CivicPulse, an app designed by area software leaders Slingshot to aid the Louisville community in following and understanding area government legislation.

The event featured CoB graduates and executive leadership of Slingshot, who detailed how they partnered with the Center during an eight-hour hackathon to produce the app, which breaks down legislation into more easily digestible sections, including planning and zoning, environment, public safety, business, transportation, parks and housing and affordability. Leaning into a variety of generative AI platforms, including Otter.AI, ChatGPT, Lovable, AWS Bedrock, Github/Cursor and Claude 3, Slingshot development, design and product team members consulted throughout the day with Center leaders to bring CivicPulse into existence. Slingshot CEO and Founder David Galownia explained, “We said, let’s throw out the playbook. Let’s start from scratch… let’s work with some real people on a real problem. Let’s see what we can do.”
