Working with the College of Business is not new to Virginia Denny. Her newly appointed position as Assistant Dean for Corporate Executive Education opens exciting new opportunities for her and the college. When asked what makes this so exciting she states, “I have always had an affinity for the College. My professional path has been leading me here for years.”
Her leadership experience began in the late 1980s during a paid college internship for the state of Kentucky and Governor, John Y. Brown. Governor Brown wanted to run the state like a business, which was an innovative idea at the time and tasked her to create an executive development training program.
After graduation, she was hired to implement the training she helped develop and, for the first time in the history of Kentucky state government, create strategic plans for every cabinet. She describes it as intense, sometimes teaching as many as four solid days straight at a time. The University of Louisville became a client too during which she developed programs like the Successful Supervisor Training series and a Unit Business Manager (UBM) certificate program, which are still in existence today. During that time, she also facilitated leadership training for executives as a contractor running her own company. Excelling at training executives, even those who were older and much more professionally experienced than she was, she discovered an innate gift for leadership and for developing that skill in others.
Fast forward to 2017 when Dean, Todd Mooradian hired her to develop an executive education program and an online certificate in Franchising. “Both programs have a lot of potential at the College of Business. The depth of knowledge and expertise is amazing. Plus, Louisville is a franchise hub which creates real opportunities and partnerships.” Virginia stated.
Her role is still taking shape tapping into the expertise she has developed over the years, with an added layer of new possibilities. She brings the glue and ability to translate the knowledge base here and package it in ways that address the needs of the corporate community. She is a critical part of the team building the innovative product portfolio including Design Thinking, a Leadership Excellence partnership, and the first in a series of online certificates, a Certificate in Franchise Management.
Bringing Virginia onboard illustrates the innovative vision driving the College’s path. Her talents are helping build programs that celebrate the things that make the College of Business great and the City of Louisville special.
