Information technology has a major impact on the workplace, is changing the rules of global competition, and quite literally changes how we communicate. Intelligent use of information technology is woven throughout the IMBA program.
Each IMBA student is required to own a multimedia personal computer system and to have access to it seven days a week. Using your PC, the UofL computer systems and an Internet access provider of your choice, you will communicate with your professors and classmates, send and receive messages over the Internet, access the World Wide Web, and conduct electronic research on a global basis.
The following information technology requirements apply to the IMBA class entering in May 2008.
If you already own a personal computer system, it must be able to do the following:
- Communicate via modem (56 Kbps or higher) with your Internet access provider
- Run Microsoft Windows XP or higher, Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher and Anti-Virus Software
- Print letter quality documents
If you plan to purchase a computer system, the following minimum entry level system configuration is provided as general guidance:
- 2.4 GHz (or higher) Celeron, Intel or AMD Processor
- 512 MB RAM (higher if your budget allows)
- 40 GB Hard Drive minimum (purchase as much Hard Drive as your budget allows)
- 56 K Fax/Modem
- Multimedia package - CD-ROM, sound card and speakers
Most new systems will come preloaded with Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Office 2003 or higher (word processor, spreadsheet and graphics presentation program), Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher and Anti-Virus software.
Walter S. Mossberg, personal technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal (http://ptech.wsj.com), has written several excellent articles about the purchase of a new computer.
We recommend a laptop computer for the IMBA program. Current and former IMBA students feel the portability laptops offer greatly enhances their efficiency in the program.
In addition to the computer requirements, you will need a business financial calculator. We recommend the Hewlett-Packard Business calculator model HP-10BII.
