College of Business named USASBE National Model PhD Entrepreneurship Program Print

National recognition for the UofL College of Business and its Forcht Center for Entrepreneurship has reached another prestigious milestone.
The United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) has named the college its 2010 National Model PhD Entrepreneurship Program award winner.
Last presented in 2004, the award is reserved for universities offering high-quality, innovative entrepreneurship programs that “reflect quality, comprehensiveness, sustainability, transferability, depth of support and impact.”

The four-year, full-time UofL program is one of few PhDs in the world with a comprehensive entrepreneurship focus.  Established in 2003, it is designed to create the next generation of exceptional entrepreneurship educators and researchers. The faculty includes award-winning teachers, scholars and researchers ranked among the finest in the world.  In the program’s first five years of operation, students produced 16 academic articles—including national award winners—and made 81 presentations at academic conferences.USASBE award logo
“The award reflects the thought and effort put in by our entire faculty who participate in the PhD program, as well as the quality and enthusiasm of our students,” said UofL PhD program Director David Dubofsky.  “We’re attracting applicants of very high quality and we look forward to working with all of them as they develop into outstanding, successful academics.”
In addition to Dubofsky, who also is a professor of finance, UofL PhD program faculty members include Associate Professor of marketing Robert Carter, Associate Professor of management and entrepreneurship Sherry Thatcher, Associate Professor of management and entrepreneurship Bruce Kemelgor, Brown-Forman Chair in Entrepreneurship James Fiet, Professor of marketing Richard Germain, CIS Professor Manju Ahuja and Associate Professor of management and entrepreneurship Melissa Baucus.
The program’s external faculty has included such leading entrepreneurship scholars as Howard Aldrich (University of North Carolina), Jay Barney (Ohio State University), Per Davidsson (Queensland University of Technology), Charles Hofer (Kennesaw State University), Bruce Kirchhoff (New Jersey Institute of Technology), Simon Parker (University of Western Ontario), Scott Shane (Case Western Reserve University) and Dean Shepherd (Indiana University).
With the 2010 USASBE award, the PhD program joins the college’s undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship programs in the national spotlight. Both are ranked among the Top 20 nationally in their respective categories.
Previously the College of Business received the USASBE National Model MBA Entrepreneurship Program award.
