More than 150 new students and their parents began their College of Business experience with a crash course in how to make the most of the next four years.
The Fall 2008 installment of the annual Freshman Friday event matched incoming students with the administrators, professors, advisors, student leaders and opportunities likely to shape their quest for degrees. The COB freshman class includes more than 430 students.
Dean Charlie Moyer told the group they enter the college with high expectations already in place.
“When I say you are the best group we’ve admitted to this college, I absolutely mean it,” he said. “As the first incoming students under our new admissions criteria with higher ACT scores and grade point average (GPA) standards, you are the best.”
Moyer encouraged the students to take advantage of the extensive resources the college offers to help students launch successful careers, including the Ulmer Career Management Center and its Mentoring Program. He also told them to look beyond Louisville and consider international learning experiences.
“(College of Business graduate) David Jones, the founder of Humana, has generously donated money so you can experience what he says is vital to a competitive professional today,” he said. “I agree, and so will most anyone is the business world.”
COB Student Council President Madison Hammond provided an upperclassman’s checklist of secrets for success.
“First, get to know your advisor,” he said. “They will help you stay on track and graduate in four years with the degree you want. Second, talk to your professors at the beginning of the semester. They really want to help you succeed. And third, get involved with student organizations. You’ll meet and network with great people.”
Then he offered a seasoned student’s survival tip.
“Take a “keep-me-sane” class, a class that’s unrelated to your
major--like bowling-- so you’ve got a built-in outlet for fun.”
The freshman also were introduced to several of the college’s student organizations, including representatives from Beta Alpha Psi, The CardShirt Co., Delta Sigma Pi, Equine Club, Student Marketing Association and Student Sales Network.
