Kerry M. Griesinger, a rising junior in the College of Business, has been selected a 2008 William G. McGowan Scholar by the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund. The award includes tuition for her senior year of studies.
The McGowan Scholars program recognizes the academic achievements and excellence of students pursuing a major offered by an accredited business school. It is designed to encourage leadership ability, interpersonal skills and a significant involvement in academic, campus and community activities. It also recognizes excellence of character, a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial potential.
Griesinger has achieved Dean’s Scholar honors (a perfect 4.0 grade point average) or made the Dean’s List every semester and has an overall GPA of 3.98. Her application for the award included preparation of a research paper exploring William McGowan’s innovations in business, especially in the telecommunications industry.
“Receiving this award is both an honor and an opportunity,” said Griesinger. “And I hope to make the most of both.”
Griesinger was the student representative at the college’s 2007-08 Awards Day ceremony and spoke about the importance of scholarships in helping students reach their goals and realize dreams. Her current plans include pursuit of a CPA designation, and additional areas of study, possibly including the college’s new entrepreneurship minor.
The McGowan Fund established the Scholars program to provide AACSB-accredited colleges and universities with scholarships to help students who wish to pursue a business education. The program is based on the experience of William G. McGowan during his college days. Though admitted to Harvard Business School to study for an MBA degree, he did not have sufficient funds to complete his studies. However, he won Harvard's Baker Scholars award that provided the funds necessary for him to earn his degree and launch a successful business career. More information about the Fund and the Scholars program is available at www.mcgowanfund.org/education.
