Studying abroad will change your life in a variety of ways, including personal growth, intercultural development, education and career skills.
- You will learn things you never knew about yourself and discover strength you never knew you had.
- You will learn about another culture and better understand your own cultural values and biases.
- You will gain educational experience by seeing the world from a different prospective.
- You will have a powerful resume and an edge in the job marketplace.
Am I eligible?
If you’re a College of Business major in good academic, financial and disciplinary standing, you are eligible. Ideally you should complete all your core courses (typically junior standing), but we address each student on an individual basis. Set up a meeting with the study abroad advisor for more eligibility details.
Where can I go?
The world is your educational opportunity! Each school provides their own method of instruction. Please see each school’s website to learn more about their instruction.

More options include UofL's International Center - approved programs:
Don’t see a program you’re interested in? Don’t give up! Search Google. If you find a program you’re interested in that isn’t currently listed as an exchange or consortium with UofL, meet with your study abroad advisor to discuss your options. Typically it’s as simple as getting the unlisted program’s coordinator to sign a consortium agreement and you’re good to go.
How long can I stay?
The University of Louisville offers programs of varying lengths, including summer-,semester-, and year-long experiences. The college also offers 2-week study tours, with part trips including Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.
In most cases, the length of your study will be determined by the program you participate in and your budget. We can help you plan and calculate according to your needs and the program of your choice.
Do I need to know the language?
Previous language knowledge is NOT required. All College of Business exchange programs listed above are taught in English; however there are some special circumstances:
- If you are considering study in China, we strongly encourage one to three semesters of Chinese prior to going abroad.
- Some schools require a language crash course and may offer in-depth language and cultural studies. If these are offered, we encourage you to take them.
- Non-College of Business programs may have more stringent language requirements and students may be asked to take courses in the host country’s language. Please discuss details of non-COB programs with the study abroad advisor.
What courses can I take? Can I get credit toward my degree?
Study abroad may provide a portion of a student’s academic earnings. During the summer a student may earn between 0.2% and 0.7% of their degree. During a semester, a student may earn 12.5% of their degree and during a year abroad a student may earn 25% of their degree.
When you meet with the study abroad advisor, you will discuss course options based on specific study abroad program(s) you are interested in and your available electives. The study abroad advisor will help determine which programs make the most sense for your major and how your courses abroad can count towards your graduation requirements. TIP: Save your electives so it’s easier to get credit while abroad!
Make an appointment with your study abroad advisor.
Other than the courses I take abroad, what are my academic obligations to the College of Business during my travel and when I return?
Depending on your destination and field of study, you may be required to prepare a report on your experiences when you return. We would also like you to contribute to our B-School Blogger pages while you're traveling by writing and/or video blogging. To see examples of past student’s blogs, please visit the B-School Blogger at http://business.louisville.edu/blog.
Upon your return, you may also have the opportunity to connect with students attending UofL from the country you have study abroad in.
How much will everything cost?
Your first expense will be a passport. Since obtaining a passport can be a lengthy process, we recommend you start the passport process now if you do not already have one.
The cost for study abroad varies. For College of Business programs, a summer abroad program may range from $2500-$12000, a semester program may range from $9,000-$30,000 and a year abroad may range from $20,000-$45,000. There are many factors that influence the cost of a study abroad program including, but not limited to, COB exchanges versus non-exchange programs, location of program, cost of living in the host country, travel expenses associated with getting to host country, personal spending habits, etc.
Other expenses will vary, but usually will include some form of tuition, airfare, room and board, additional school expenses (books, etc.) and other monthly expenses (groceries, gifts, travel while there, etc.). These expenses will differ according to travel location, monetary exchange rates and the local cost of living.
Notes:
- If you chose to study abroad through a UofL exchange program, you will pay regular UofL tuition fees. You will not be asked to pay tuition fees to the host university.
- Abroad opportunities outside of UofL may charge other tuition or program fees.
- Costs associated with the Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS), International Studies Abroad (ISA) and other consortium programs vary, but tend to include tuition, accommodations, limited meals and some group excursions.
