PhD IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

entrepreneurship phd students

Welcome to the University of Louisville’s College of Business—the home of a very special doctoral program in entrepreneurship that is unique in several respects.  First, no other program currently matches its breadth of content, which includes 15 (and growing) doctoral level entrepreneurship seminars.

Second, no other program in the world brings together the expertise of its program faculty, which come from universities around the world to teach in their particular area of expertise. In fact, these renowned scholars were invited to teach in the program precisely because of their outstanding scholarship in the area in which they teach. However, teaching is not their only contribution.  Students may continue to carry on their professional relationships with external faculty to the extent that they share common research interests.  In addition, they may also serve on dissertation committees.

Third, no other program teaches its seminars in an intensive modular format, which has several advantages. Students tell us that they enjoy the sequential nature of their study, which allows them to focus on one topic at a time as they cover the same content in a week that they would cover in an entire semester.  Students prepare all of their readings in advance of the start of each module so that they can discuss their contributions.  At the conclusion of each seminar module, each student prepares a conceptual or empirical paper suitable for submission to a professional conference.

Fourth, students also tell us that they find the culminating, integrative seminar to be very effective in bringing the concepts together so they can build their own mental framework.  The coursework is followed by rigorous preliminary examinations.  Many students comment that the mental frameworks developed in the integrative seminar are quite helpful in not only passing their preliminary examinations, but also in making sense of the very eclectic field of entrepreneurship research.

Finally, very few programs, if any, offer a seminar in entrepreneurship pedagogy, which is linked directly to an undergraduate entrepreneurship curriculum.  Our students teach entrepreneurship courses after their second year. As students embark on their own teaching they will find that they continue to receive coaching and support in transferring the theory-driven prescriptions, which they learn about and develop as they progress through the program.

The UofL entrepreneurship doctoral program is not the only program in the world, but there is no other program similar to it.  If you are interested in launching an academic career dedicated to developing and disseminating new knowledge, we invite you to consider what our program has to offer. Although you will find the admission process to be highly selective, we think you will be pleased with the unique advantages that our program has to offer.
