During the first two years of the program, students take the following courses:
-
A set of six seminars taught by some of the most prominent academic scholars in entrepreneurship - each of these external faculty is an expert in linking entrepreneurship to an adjacent academic area (psychology, sociology, economics, strategy, etc.)
-
Seminars that focus on other areas of academic research, linking entrepreneurship to organizational behavior, financing, etc. are taught by UofL faculty to highlight other subtle aspects of the role of entrepreneurship in our society or to integrate what our students have learned in their seminars
- Statistics and research methods courses
- Self-study courses and electives
Our external faculty come from universities around the world to teach in their particular areas of expertise. In fact, these renowned scholars were invited to teach in the program precisely because of their outstanding scholarship in the area in which they teach. However, teaching is not their only contribution to our program. Students may continue to carry on their professional relationships with external faculty to the extent that they share common research interests. In addition, external faculty may also serve on dissertation committees. Courses taught by our external faculty are generally intensively taught during a one week time period. Courses taught by UofL faculty are generally taught as regular semester-long classes.
Our goal is to produce academic scholars who will present papers at professional conferences, publish papers in academic journals, and teach at the university level. We anticipate that our students will be successful academics at other leading universities. Because of this, our students serve as research assistants during three of their four years in the program. Students teach during one year in the program, after they have taken a pedagogy seminar that focuses on the teaching of entrepreneurship.
After passing their qualifying exams, required courses, and writing required papers, students proceed into candidacy and write their doctoral dissertations in their last two years of the program.
The UofL entrepreneurship doctoral program is not the only program in the world, but there is no other program similar to it. If you are interested in launching an academic career dedicated to developing and disseminating new knowledge, we invite you to consider what our program has to offer. The admission process is highly selective. On average, we accept only about three students into our program each year. We are confident that the highly qualified students admitted will be pleased with the unique advantages that our program has to offer.
Consistent with our biennial admission policy, there will be no Fall 2009 cohort. We will begin considering applicants for our Fall 2010 cohort in November 2009. Please return to this website or contact the program director for more information at that time.
