Beating the odds: Jim Fiet’s new book reduces risk, boosts success in entrepreneurial ventures Print

Photo of James Fiet     In team sports, conventional wisdom says you can’t coach attitude.
     In his latest book, entrepreneurship guru Jim Fiet applies a similar constant to the creation of new business ventures.  He finds that while you can’t teach luck, you can compensate for its absence. His research suggests entrepreneurs can overcome bad luck by (1) searching systematically for venture ideas with wealth creating potential and (2) commercializing them with a forgiving business model.

Business spoken here: Ballard Morton previews presentations for competition that now bears his name Print

Photo of Ballard Morton     Chris Crook wanted to learn a new language—a language with international applications, but one not native to any country.   So the IT director at Humana enrolled in the College of Business IMBA 14 class—the MBA program for entrepreneurial thinking. His goal: To learn how to speak “business.”    
“Investors,” he says flatly.  “I want to learn the language of venture capitalists.” 

     Recently Crook and 10 other would-be entrepreneurs enjoyed a rare opportunity to practice their new tongue for a Louisville business icon who has just lent his name and support to the college’s annual business plan competition—Ballard T. Morton.   Among other things, Morton is renowned for his fluency in the many languages of business.

College gets in step with “Champions 4 Her” run/walk Print

champions4.jpg     Joining nearly 2,000 other participants, College of Business staff and faculty stepped up Saturday at a special event to raise money and awareness for women’s issues.
     According to a Louisville Courier-Journal report, the inaugural “Champions 4 Her” walk and run festival generated more than $147,000 for 10 organizations, including Women 4 Women, Project Women, the Center for Women and Families and the University of Louisville Women’s Center/PEACC Program.

674 undergraduates make spring ’08 Dean’s Lists Print

     A total of 674 College of Business students earned Dean’s honors for the spring ’08 semester, including 72 who scored perfect 4.0 grade point averages (GPAs) and were named Dean’s Scholars.
     To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must complete at least 12 hours of coursework and earn a GPA of 3.25 or higher. Each semester, the students’ names are posted on the College of Business atrium level and our website.

Equine team scores best individual performance ever in IHSA Nationals Print

Stacey Mahlmeister performing in IHSA 2008 National Championships video icon The UofL Equine Riding and Racing Team posted its best individual member finish ever at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) 2008 National Championships. (Click for Video)
     Stacey Mahlmeister, a senior in the College of Business Equine Industry Program (EIP) and riding team captain, finished fourth riding "Skeeter" in the IHSA’s 2008 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) High Point Western Rider competition. The championships, which included several other divisions, were held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, Calif.
